1700-1730PaintingAlthough not strictly within this period of 1700-1730, and not exclusively central European (Liotard was French-Swiss from Geneva) this character is too good to pass up. Take a look at two paintings by the artist: 1, Monsieur Levett and Mademoiselle Glavani in Turkish costume and 2, Self Portrait from 1744 in Vienna and housed in the Uffizi. Skim over the following articles and/or read in depth and make detailed notes on the two works, focussing particularly on nationalism, gender and ethnicity as well as the style and technique of the artist.

SculptureArchitectureThough there is not much on it, please read pages 69-73 in The Architecture of the 18th Century (which is in both the France section and the general reading section) on the Frauenkirche, built by George Bahr between 1725 and 1743. In particular think about the type of patronage, the multiple functions and the way in which the form of the church is designed to fulfil that function.

1730-1765PaintingThis reading will be for part of both painting and architecture. It is a difficult reading and the kind of thing which you will begin to read at university. The language is complex and the meaning not always easy to find, so do the best you can and don't worry about not understanding everything, Come armed with questions, if not answers... Minimum: read page 19 till the end (beginning with 'Piety'). Those of you who want to push yourselves, try to read from earlier on.

1765-1800PaintingThis is a fascinating painting which technically could be English or Swiss, but it makes little difference. Make detailed notes...this video is excellent for examining themes! Combine with formal analysis.
